Thrush is a common yeast infection caused by the Candida albicans fungus. Both men and women can be affected by thrush, but vaginal thrush is much more common, affecting most women at some time in their lives. Thrush can also be contracted in the mouth and throat.
Thrush generally manifests itself in the form of itching and soreness in the genital area, combined with redness, stinging when urinating and, occasionally, discharge. Depending on the severity and how often it occurs, Thrush can be treated using creams, tablets or pessaries. Thrush has no definitive cause, but it can be avoided by keeping up a good routine of personal hygiene, using perfume free soaps in the genital area and avoiding tight fitting underwear.
